Why the rule changed
A run of consumer unit fires, often caused by loose connections overheating inside the enclosure, led to the change in the Wiring Regulations requiring non-combustible enclosures in domestic premises.
What inspectors do with plastic units
A plastic consumer unit in good condition is usually recorded as a C3, improvement recommended. It may be coded C2 if it sits under the stairs or in another escape route, shows signs of heat damage, or lacks RCD protection for circuits that need it.
When replacement makes sense
- The unit has no RCD protection, so an upgrade fixes two problems at once
- It is in an escape route such as a hallway cupboard or under the stairs
- You are refurbishing or between tenancies anyway
- There is any sign of scorching, cracking or buzzing
When it can wait
A plastic unit with RCBOs or dual RCDs, in good condition and not in an escape route, does not usually need replacing straight away. Plan it into your next refurbishment.
