Consumer unit replacement cost

A consumer unit replacement is the most common large job after an EICR. Our domestic replacements cost from £495 to £695.

What affects the price

  • Number of circuits and whether RCBOs are used for each one
  • Surge protection, now required in most new installations
  • Earthing or bonding upgrades found during pre-testing
  • Moving the unit to a new location

What is included

A metal-clad consumer unit, testing of every circuit before and after, a new circuit chart, an Electrical Installation Certificate and building control notification in England and Wales.

Why metal-clad?

Since 2016 the Wiring Regulations have required consumer units in homes to be made of non-combustible material, usually steel. Older plastic units are not automatically unsafe but are often coded C3, or C2 if located in an escape route.

Faults found during the work

Pre-testing sometimes reveals faults on existing circuits that stop them being connected to RCD protection. We tell you before starting and give a fixed price for any extra work.

FAQ

Questions

How long does a consumer unit change take?
Most domestic replacements take one working day with the power off for most of it.
Do I need to tell building control?
In England and Wales yes, but a registered electrician notifies it for you and you receive a compliance certificate.
