EICR vs PAT testing
One covers the wiring in the walls, the other covers the things you plug in. Landlords often need both.
| EICR | PAT testing | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | Fixed wiring, consumer unit, sockets, fixed equipment | Plug-in appliances and leads |
| Legal for landlords | Yes, in all four UK nations | Yes in Scotland; recommended elsewhere |
| How often | At least every 5 years for rentals | Usually every 1 to 2 years |
| Output | Report with codes and test schedule | Labels and an asset register |
Why book them together
The same electrician can do both in one visit, so tenants only provide access once and you get one set of paperwork. Added to an EICR, PAT testing costs £1.50 per item.
Which comes first?
If you can only book one, the EICR is the legal requirement across the UK. In Scotland you need both.
